DESCRIPTION: Length 12 to 25mm. A sturdy looking carrion beetle with the distinctive features being:- large orange clubs on the end of the antennae, a black pronotum sporting golden hairs on the fore margin and red bands on the black elytra with the anterior band noticeably interrupted. BEHAVIOUR: Adults live on and lay eggs in carrion.  Both parents look after the offspring. Pupation takes place within soil with many young adults emerging and hibernating over the winter months. Adults can be attracted to light. DISTRIBUTION: Well-distributed throughout mainland UK with most records coming from southern Britain. HABITAT: Found in a variety of habitats including woodland, grassland, coastal areas, gardens and heathland. PERIOD: May to September.
